I like watching the books (??)

This post answers the question for Day 19. I haven’t yet answered the question for Day 17 (and Day 18 is here) because it requires me to embed videos in the blog post, which requires me to switch on my laptop and I might not be able to do that for a while. It didn’t occur to me (until now) that I could just skip a post and come back to it later, which is why I spent all these days not writing a post and trying to find a solution to the no-laptop problem.

Day 19: Do you prefer the books or the films?

Usually? The answer is always books.

In case of Harry Potter though, I see the entire Harry Potter fandom and all of its source material as a gigantic mish-mash of happiness and feels and all good things you can think of.
Which is why it is really difficult for me to choose.

Also, if this question was asked to me a couple of years ago, I’d say books.
Because I was this super-crazy girl who thought movies are just, like, okay and that they don’t tend to impact your lives in the same way that books do. (I mean movies in general, not Harry Potter).
While the latter half of that sentence still holds true to a certain extent, I have realised that movies can be just as awesome as books and can teach you just as much and evoke just as many feelings.
Yes, at moments like these, I realise I’ve grown up quite a lot. But I digress.

If you absolutely held a gun to my head, I’d end up answering this question with “books” but really, that’s just unfair.

Because yes, books were written first and they had the original J K Rowling magic and they contain a part of my soul and nothing could ever come close to this perfect set of book series that started it all for me.

But now, after it’s been years since I first read the books, I happen to be watching the movies more often than reading the books.
The movies help me satisfy my Harry Potter cravings because I’m not much of a re-reader (Harry Potter is still an exception), and a single scene can make me miss the entire series with a new vigour.
I have fallen in love with the actors who play my favourite characters, I’ve grown up with them (although they’ve grown up faster, I think?) and now I feel so proud to see Emma Watson being the ambassador of HeForShe and Rupert Grint owning an ice cream truck and distributing ice cream to children.
I love it when I spot Harry Potter actors in other movies and I will forever associate them with their Harry Potter characters.

Couldn't resist adding a picture

I hope this answers the question.

Until the next post! 🙂

My Social Life at Hogwarts!

Day 15: Pick three characters to be your best friends at Hogwarts.

Let me get started on answering this question right away because I’ve daydreamed about this more often than I care to admit.

Also notice how the question says best friends, because I really plan to have more than just 3 friends when I go to Hogwarts and since I’m hoping to be a part of the years of The Golden Trio, I will quite possibly be friends with just about everybody, including Draco Malfoy (and if he looks anything like Tom Felton, then definitely Draco Malfoy).

Hermione Granger

Hermione is so awesome!
I’ve always connected to her ever since I started reading the books and I always wished for a friend like her.
So my first choice for friends at Hogwarts is Hermione Granger, hands down!
And well, think about it (because I have), we both could sit in the library and read tonnes of books.
She’d appreciate the company, and the fact that we’d both be quiet and lost in our own books wouldn’t matter to her (or me) a bit.
Oftentimes, you make conversation with people just because you’re sitting with them and feel the need to fill those awkward silences. We wouldn’t need to do that at all.
We’d also end up studying for the exams together and again, she’d appreciate hanging out with me as opposed to Ron and Harry because, don’t get her wrong, she loves those two but they’re extremely annoying when it comes to studying! Those two really don’t care, do they?

(Although I’d probably disappoint her in this case because I don’t get much studying done myself!
But the fact that it’s magic studies coupled with the fact that I’d be with Hermione might bring about a change in me. Yes, I’m hoping Hermione rubs off on me.)

I’d also set up Ron and Hermione as soon as I could, and I’d be there for her every time she felt like she required some girl advice because both the boys are hopeless!

The times we aren’t in the library reading, we’d be hanging out and discussing books. We’d totally fangirl.
I’d just go crazy shipping my OTPs and Hermione would come up with extremely well thought out fan theories and headcanons and we’d become this fangirling duo at Hogwarts just like Greddy and Forgy are the mischievous duo. Which brings me to my next pick of friends:

Fred and George Weasley

Can you even imagine the amount of fun I’d have at Hogwarts if I hung out with these two?

And I wouldn’t have to worry about attending boring classes ever again, although of course, Hermione would drag my ass to them whether I liked it or not. And she’d see through the twins’ tricks every time!

But I’d have access to the Marauder’s Map!!
I’d sneak out with them, help them in their elaborate plans and just be there as moral support, if nothing else.
(And they’d like it if someone anonymously- or not- blogged about the successful and the not-so-successful tricks they played on various teachers and students… Three guesses as to who’d volunteer. Because everyone needs a blogger- even Sherlock Holmes!)
I’d persuade Hermione to convince Harry to lend us the Invisibility Cloak every once in a while, when he’s not too busy trying to save the world using it.
And because I’d be friends with Hermione, I would, by extension, be friends with the trio.
This is a win-win!

Luna Lovegood

(Yes I’m choosing one more, shut up! Gred and Forge are one unit, they do not count separately. If you’re not convinced, I’ll post a few really really sad posts trying to prove my point, but I have decided to spare you- and myself- the feels. Every single mention of Fred and George doesn’t have to be sad. That sort of defeats their purpose in the books.)
(Also- how could I not choose Luna?
For someone who loves Luna as much as I do, I haven’t been appreciating her enough this past month)

So, Luna!
I don’t really know what to say about our time at Hogwarts.
That is because I have no idea what it’ll be like.
Luna is so unpredictable- which is exactly why I’d like to be friends with her.
We’d talk about Nargles and Wrackspurts and she’d also randomly spout wisdom and I’d realise all over again why I admire her so much.
We’d both be in Ravenclaw so she’d be my house-buddy!
We’d sit together in classes and along with Hermione, we’d probably become this girl trio.
Of course, I’d first have to convince Hermione just how awesome Luna actually is… It would be good for Hermione too.

Luna is one of the most loyal friends I’ve come across in the books and I’d never take her friendship for granted.
The best thing about her is that she accept me the way I am (which is fortunately true for most of my current friends as well) and I’d do the same for her.

I’ve been pretty irregular here as far as the challenge is concerned, and I’d like to thank Aditi at My Crazy High School Life for reading my blog yesterday and commenting on various posts which reminded me how much I love blogging and so I ended up writing this post (I was planning to, of course, but got busy and finally did it today).
Thanks Aditi, my fellow Potterhead, you did not forget to be awesome! 🙂

“The world is not divided into good people and Death Eaters”

Day 14: Team Harry or Team Voldemort

Everybody seems to be answering this question with “TEAM HARRY FTW!!”
and “Who’d even choose Voldemort like siriusly?”
To be honest, my response on hearing the question was same; followed by “Why would you even ask this question?”
But then I’ve been thinking about it for a while (and since I’ve been not blogging every single day, I got time to do that) and I thought about it in a different way, sort of like Leanna’s post, but slightly different.
(She does explain the Draco and Narcissa part nicely though)

She asks the question, Under what circumstances would you join Team Voldy?
And think about it, it is really easy to choose Team Harry after having read Harry Potter and seeing how it ends and every thing that actually happens and there’s a clear distinction between the good guys and the bad guys.
But what about if you were actually there?
And you didn’t know who was good or bad?
As somebody who was, say, 17 before Harry was even born and Voldemort had power, would you join the Order or Voldemort?
What if your family was pureblood, or better yet, somebody from your family was a Death Eater?
What if we’re scared about defying Voldemort?
What if The Dark Lord has done some harm to our families?

Of course, in spite of saying all of this, I’m still, willingly, Team Harry.
I try my best to always be a good person.
I’m not a racist, sexist or a homophobe and I try to be as tolerant and accepting of others as possible.
I have no desire to be powerful either, not really.
I wouldn’t know what to do.
So you know, it is safe to say, I’d be Team Harry anyway.

But what I’m trying to say is, we should think about whether we would be so confident about joining Team Harry under any circumstances…

Day 13: Your Least Favourite Movie
Day 18: Your Least Favourite Book

I racked my brains.
This is what my brain came up with:

The question about least favourite book literally makes no sense.
It doesn’t even register in my head for the few moments it would require me to come up with an answer.

The one about my least favourite movie, maybe I can think of if I watch all the movies once now (marathon them, I mean) (Wow! Now there’s an idea!) and then decide which one was not the most interesting.

But right now, I can’t do it for various reasons.
One of them being that I don’t want to.

The Harry Potter movies have now become a thing that I watch parts of every time they come on TV.
I rarely (if ever) sit down by myself to watch them.
Harry Potter movies on TV equals excitement for me.

It doesn’t matter which movie it is, or what scene is on when I watch.
Five minutes of watching Harry Potter is enough to create a torrent of emotions in my mind regarding the entire series and the effect it has had on my life.
Oftentimes it so happens that I watch a particular scene which makes me realise something (be it about the series or myself) that I didn’t know before.
Then I have to sit down and think- once again- about how this series is so brilliant and how it is full of surprises and how I can never stop loving it ever.

I know I didn’t answer the questions asked, but that my response was sufficient for the questions asked.

It’s a Riddikulus shipping business!

Yes, yes.
I know.
I disappeared.
But I’m back now so that’s good.
Although I don’t know if I can post everyday.

Day 12: Your Favourite ship

I ship Harry/Ginny (Hinny), Romione, Jily, Remus/Tonks, Molly/Arthur and practically every cute ship there is to ship.
I don’t have a favourite.

So here’s what I’m gonna do instead.
I’m going to treat you.

Here are some of the funniest ships ever, starting with my personal favourite!

This is mind blowing actually!

Tom Felton on Drapple is the best thing ever!!!

Surely you’ve heard of Scorange too?
Taking the Drapple legacy ahead:

Then there’s ChickRon:

Flarry (No this isn’t Fleur and Harry but in fact….) :

Yes it’s a ship. I’m not kidding.

This ship is actually only half funny because I actually ship it.
Like, actually.

So long people!

Musings about the Mirror of Erised (for the most part)

Day 11: Which character would you say you are most like?

“I’m like Luna in the sense that I don’t give a damn what anybody thinks about me.
I do my own thing anyway.

I’m like Hermione because I think reading has the solution to every problem (and doesn’t it?)

I relate to the Patil twins because we share the same surname.”

Yes that’s all I could come up with when I first gave the question a thought.

That would make for drab reading, I know. But I literally did not know what to do.

As usual, Leanna came to my rescue.
She’s one Nerdfighter who takes not forgetting to be awesome very siriusly.
Just like her, I did the Buzzfeed quiz called Which Harry Potter character are you?

Before I tell you my answer, let me show you an interesting thing:

So the question is, which object do you most desire?
And one of the options is “The Mirror of Erised”
I mean, how does that work?

If your most desired object is The Mirror, then what would you see in it once you got it?
And if all you’d see is yourself standing there happily then what was the point in getting that mirror in the first place?

Or alternatively, if you choose the mirror because you don’t know which object you want, how do you know it is not just the mirror that you want?

Yeah okay. I’ll shut up.
Even I don’t know what I’m saying.

Anyway my result was this:

It is kind of creepy that they know about the self-doubt thing.
Because it’s been happening a lot lately.
The loyalty to loved ones thing is very true.
I am fiercely loyal.
Even to my fandoms.

And I like to think I’m easygoing and funny!

Well that’s my answer for yesterday’s question.
I’ve fallen one day behind now but I’ll catch up, I suppose.

That reminds me of a funny and cute joke I once heard.
A Mama Tomato, Papa Tomato and Baby Tomato are walking down the road…
Baby Tomato falls behind, so Papa Tomato shouts at him,
“Tomato, Ketchup!”

(Hey look! I’m funny!)

“He greeted Death as an old friend…”

Day 10: Horcruxes or Hallows?

I’ll let J K Rowling answer this for me (sort of):

Hehe... I never thought I'd love this woman more, but I do!

I don’t want horcruxes.
So my answer is Hallows.
It makes sense.
Why would I kill several people and cut my soul into pieces just so I can achieve immortality?

I’d rather be invisible when I want to be, use the Elder Wand to cast all my spells (a normal wand would do too, but Elder Wand is just extra assurance that I’m not going to fail at the whole magic and spells and curses thing) and maybe, talk to a deceased loved one every once in a while.

Technically, right now I don’t have any use for the Resurrection Stone.
Nor do I think I will be having duels with any wizards or witches (I’m more of a no-confrontation-until-absolutely-necessary kinda girl… I’m all for intense negotiations to sort out problems though) so I think only the Invisibility Cloak is going to be of any actual use to me…
(And I sure as hell won’t be visiting the library. Hehehe…)

Truth is,you don’t need to give me any of these Hallows or superior powers over other witches and wizards- I don’t even want immortality- just give me an ordinary wand and a Hogwarts acceptance letter, and maybe an owl for a pet, and I’ll live happily ever after.

“Can you possibly imagine a better way to serve detention?”

Day 9: Who’s your least favourite male character and why?

He is so ridiculous I don’t even know what to write in this post.
He is definitely my least favourite.
I remember hating Fenrir Greyback a lot when I first read the books but now I don’t remember much about him, and there isn’t much to go on anyway.

I think Gilderoy Lockhart is the only character in the books who is as ridiculous as (if not more than) his AVPM counterpart.

Yes well... Did I say how much I love this musical?

And what makes me sad is that he was a Ravenclaw.
Of course I know that all Ravenclaws aren’t awesome and smart and brilliant, but it really saddens me to see that this idiot belonged to my house.

Yes, yes, I know what you’re thinking! ‘It’s all right for him, he’s an internationally famous wizard already!’ But when I was twelve, I was just as much of a nobody as you are now. In fact, I’d say I was even more of a nobody! I mean, a few people have heard of you, haven’t they? All that business with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named!” He glanced at the lightning scar on Harry’s forehead. “I know, I know — it’s not quite as good as winningWitch Weekly’s Most-Charming-Smile Award five times in a row, as I have — but it’s a start, Harry, it’s a start.

Celebrity is as celebrity does

Merlin, Third Class, Honorary Member of the Dark Force Defense League, and five times winner of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award. But I don’t talk about that; I didn’t get rid of the Banden Banshee by smiling at him.

Remember this?

1. What is Gilderoy Lockhart’s favourite colour?
2. What is Gilderoy Lockhart’s secret ambition?
3. What, in you opinion, is Gilderoy Lockhart’s greatest achievement to date?
On and on it went, over three sides of paper, right down to:
54. When is Gilderoy Lockhart’s birthday, and what would his ideal gift be?

Sadly, we know the answers to some, if not all, of these questions.

My dear boy, do use your common sense! My books wouldn’t have sold have as well if people didn’t think I did all those things…

Why are these questions so bloody difficult!?!?

Day 8: What’s your favourite lesson from the series?

The Harry Potter series has 7 books, 8 movies, several more smaller books, an upcoming spin-off, a musical parody.
It has one of the largest fandoms in the world and it has defined an entire generation. It has become a way of life for more people than you and I can imagine.
Some of them started reading the series as kids and grew up reading them. I’m one of them.
Harry Potter has given us life lessons, taught us values- it has shaped our lives. Most of us don’t remember our lives from before Harry Potter.
J K Rowling has quite literally made me the person I am today- or at least laid the foundation.
I think it’d be safe to say that it is impossible to write in about 250 to 500 words about our one favourite lesson from Harry Potter.

A couple of months ago, I got a chance to talk about Harry Potter for 3 minutes. It wasn’t a prepared speech. I just had to go up there and talk.
And I did.
I don’t remember much of what I said (you could say I was in a bit of a trance) but most people who were there said I spoke longer than 3 minutes.
And here’s the surprising part: at the end of it, I wasn’t happy with myself. I hadn’t done it justice.
I’ll blog about Harry Potter for 30 days now (hopefully)- and that’s not counting all my previous random posts about Harry Potter and my future posts- and I’ll feel like I’ve not done it justice.

Today when I read the prompt, it’s the same feeling I got, that no matter what or how much I wrote I wouldn’t do it justice; which is why I’m posting this later than usual- I didn’t know where to begin.
Now, a couple of hours to midnight I decided to sit down and write whatever I was thinking of. Thus this rambling session happened.

Harry Potter has taught me that your loved ones are all you have in the end.
Be it friends or family.
Harry Potter has taught me that you have to not be selfish sometimes and do certain things for the greater good.
It has taught me how crucial sacrifice is.
Harry Potter has taught me that only you can save yourself in the end.

Harry Potter has taught me to be empathetic, to be kind to others, to treat everyone with respect, to be less prejudiced, more tolerant and accepting.

Harry Potter continues to teach me lots of things lots of times.
I simply cannot write one post about it.
Learning from Harry Potter is a life long process and I’ll continue to learn.

Wit Beyond Measure Is Man’s Greatest Treasure

I don’t even know if I should answer today’s question since everyone who reads my blog already knows the answer.
But since some of you don’t know the question and because I’ve decided to do this challenge and well, I’d love to answer this question, here we go!

Day 6: Which house would you want to be in?

Don’t you mean: Which house are you in?

I’ll let my T-shirt do the talking here (if my Username hasn’t already answered for you) :

Yes, I’m a proud Ravenclaw, I was sorted that way.

What I really like about Ravenclaw (or all the houses really, with their own traits) is how it’s not about whether you’re intelligent or smart or wise, but about what you value the most.
So if you value knowledge and wisdom over everything else, then you have the qualities of a Ravenclaw.

You can notice that in the Ravenclaw part in the Sorting Hat song…

“Or yet in wise, old Ravenclaw,
If you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning
Will always find their kind”

If you’ve a ready mind

If you’re actually willing to learn.

I have always been a bit greedy when it comes to knowledge.
Even from a young age, I read everything I could get my hands on, always wanted to gain more knowledge, and one of my legit concerns is that I’m going to die without learning half the things I wish to learn.

Reading Wikipedia articles and watching TED talks is my idea of fun.
I learn new languages because I like to.

I make lists of things I need to read more about and they include everything from Artificial Intelligence, Cryptology, Metaphysics to Art History and Fashion History.

Yeah, in case you didn’t notice, I’m a bit of a nerd.
The prospect of learning something new excites me!!

(That is not to say I don’t get bored sitting in lectures in college, but well that’s a whole different story)

I had once reblogged this post about Ravenclaw which very nicely sums up all the nuances of my house.

The other day I found this brilliant Tumblr post:

To end the post, I’d like to add something Luna once said (and reading it was one of my proudest moments as a Ravenclaw because ‘OMR! Such smarts!! Much wisdom!!’)…

“Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?”

“…I think the answer is that a circle has no beginning.”
“Well reasoned.”
